Water Heater Load Management Program
Load management allows MEC to remotely control the electricity to your water heater through a switch installed on the water heater.
When we control the energy to the water heater, the hot water previously produced and stored in your tank will remain hot beyond the end of the control period. Controlling does not occur every day (generally 3-4 times a month) and can occur between 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., which are peak usage periods.
Participating in this program reduces the number of kilowatt-hours used during the peak usage time, which helps reduce strain on the electric grid.
If you use 400 kWh or more in a month, we will apply a $4 credit to the account for that month. If you use less than 400 kWh, no credit will be issued for that month.
You may have one water heater load management credit per electric account.
To participate in the water heater loan program, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You must be a homeowner.
- You must have good payment history on your MEC electric account.
- Your electric account must be on the residential billing rate only.
- You must install your water heater within 30 days.
- You must agree to the terms of the load management program.
